Africa Code Academy
Year-End Playbook

An $80,000 year-end appeal to secure Africa Code Academy’s January–June 2027 runway: sustaining the work while developing and testing a financially sustainable model for the long term. Poloko, Kananelo and SaMMy show why that future is worth backing.

November 2026 · Campaign planning draft

Campaign purpose

Secure six months to build a sustainable future.

$80,000The year-end runway target, to be raised by December 31.
January–JuneTime to keep ACA operating while developing and testing a durable funding model.
A lasting ACAThe longer-term objective. Six months provides a window to build and test the model; it does not guarantee sustainability.

The immediate purpose is a six-month operating bridge for ACA’s reset. The program remains part of what gifts support, alongside the leadership, operating capacity and work required to establish dependable future funding. The timeframe comes from the reset plan; it is not a claim that six months is a complete program cycle.

The campaign’s success measure is runway secured for January–June, in accordance with the board’s recorded decision rule. Building a recurring donor base is one part of the work that runway enables. Monthly gifts remain welcome now; a wider recurring-giving effort belongs within the H1 sustainability plan.

Proof worth preserving

Poloko and Kananelo trained at Africa Code Academy and helped build SaMMy, a startup Africa Code Foundry is helping launch and continues to support. Lesotho PostBank has used the software for eight months under a signed contract.

This demonstrates the academy-to-startup pathway. A product’s adoption does not by itself establish that ACA has dependable operating income. The story gives donors a reason to back the work; the reset plan explains the financing need.

An exceptional appeal to established supporters

Past major donors receive the clearest explanation of the financial crossroads, the six-month purpose, what will change and how progress will be assessed. The request is for an additional bridge contribution appropriate to each relationship.

“Exceptional” describes the purpose and timing. It does not promise that ACA will never need another appeal. The financial model is still being developed, and that uncertainty is part of the conversation.

A clear public invitation

The public story connects the real people and product to a simple purpose: support the academy’s next six months while it builds a stronger financial foundation. Broad outreach contributes gifts, introductions and credibility for personal donor conversations.

Fund a Day remains the campaign’s participation device. The calendar visualizes contributions to the runway; it is not a separate strategy or a literal sale of teaching days.

H1 work on sustainable funding

The funded period creates capacity to test recurring giving, renewed larger support, partnerships and other suitable funding routes. Each route needs evidence of demand, costs, commitments and collections before it belongs in the operating forecast.

The aim is a viable cost-and-income model for ACA. Commercial success at ACF or SaMMy is not assumed to transfer automatically into charitable funding for the academy.

Fundraising priorities

Now through December: secure the operating bridge, led by personal conversations with past major donors and credible introductions. Public stories, Demo Day and Giving Tuesday support that effort.

January through June: use the runway to build and test the sustainable model, including a more general recurring-support campaign. Pilot monthly giving can start now, without becoming the year-end campaign’s main success criterion.

Throughout: maintain a cash forecast, distinguish commitments from receipts, report actual progress and make decisions before the runway is exhausted.

The work the runway enables

Time to change the model, with evidence along the way.

The reset combines continued mission delivery with deliberate work on costs, funding and organizational capacity. The milestones below are proposed planning checkpoints for board adoption. Specific financial thresholds and reporting commitments require approval before being offered to donors.

Proposed checkpointWork and evidenceDecision it supports
JanuaryConfirm the operating scope, full cost, cash obligations and minimum viable delivery model. Establish a month-by-month funding and expenditure plan. What ACA can deliver within the secured runway, and which funding routes deserve focused testing.
February–MarchTest a small number of funding routes: recurring support, repeat major gifts and suitable partnerships. Measure actual commitments, payment timing, collections, acquisition effort and retention.Which routes can provide repeatable net income, and which require adjustment or should be stopped.
By AprilCompare evidenced income prospects with the ongoing cost base. Review concentration risk, available cash and the time needed to act on a shortfall.Whether to continue, narrow or redesign the model; whether additional bridge funding is justified by evidence.
May–JuneConfirm post-June funding, scope and obligations. Publish an agreed update on results, remaining risks and next steps.A funded operating plan beyond June, or an orderly alternative agreed by the board before obligations outrun available funds.

What would demonstrate sustainability?

A credible recurring cost base, identifiable funding sources, commitments with realistic payment dates and evidence of successful collection. Monthly donors may contribute, alongside renewed major gifts and other appropriate support. No donor-count target alone establishes sustainability.

What the bridge cannot promise

The $80,000 gives ACA time and capacity to do this work. It cannot guarantee the outcome. A donor case can describe the work, budget, milestones and proposed reporting; it should not promise that ACA will be self-sustaining by July.

Funding mix

One-time funding and a recurring base.

The one-time column carries the six-month bridge target. The monthly column illustrates a limited early pilot for the H1 funding work. Gift amount is the payment size: $25 once and $25/month are different commitments. These counts are planning objectives, not confirmed donors or evidence of reach.

Total monthly11 supporters$300/monthFuture payments stay outside year-end receipts
Important constraint: the $66,000 in larger one-time gifts is retained from the original gift chart, not validated by online benchmarks. It needs named viable prospects and payment dates. If the $25,000 lead gift does not land, the starting scenario’s gap becomes $33,200. Social outreach is not assumed to make up that loss.
Funding scenarios · illustrative
1 paymentOne is the working assumption; two require an early start and successful collection
80%A management haircut for late starts, cancellations and failed payments

$71,500 one-time + $300 subscription receipts by December 31 = $71,800 toward $80,000.

Unallocated year-end gap: $8,200.

Year-end receipt mix: 99.6% one-time / 0.4% recurring payments.

Separate January–June projection: $300/month × 6 × 80% = $1,440. This does not reduce the December 31 gap.

All model receipts are gross USD before processing costs. Reconcile available funds, prior bills, fees and restrictions separately. Counts must be replaced by actual commitments and receipts as the campaign progresses. A donor who makes both kinds of gift is one person with two separately recorded gift components.

An optional early recurring pilot

A small pilot can seek five supporters, then ten at $25, as capacity allows. One $50 supporter is a limited additional objective. Keep $100, $250, $500 and $1,000/month available, with zero assumed in the base case. A donor’s scheduled installments toward a fixed pledge are not automatically an additional ongoing subscription.

What reaching $80,000 would take

With the starting larger-gift chart and $300 of first subscription payments, public one-time gifts would need to reach $13,700. The modest public model produces $5,500, leaving $8,200 unallocated. Assign additional personal asks or bridge support to that gap. Keep it unallocated until real prospects are identified.

Outreach and conversion

The audience needed to support the goal.

The illustrative public mix includes 100 one-time gifts and an optional 11-supporter recurring pilot. That is 111 successful giving decisions. Achieving that volume depends on qualified reach and personal introductions.

M+R reports a 4% mobile donation-page conversion rate for its Small cohort. For this plan, use 2% as a cautious traffic scenario, with 1% as downside. These are management assumptions below that benchmark, not measured ACA rates. At 2%, 111 giving decisions require about 5,550 qualified donation-page visits; at 1%, about 11,100. These are page visits, not social impressions, and they do not establish monthly uptake. Direct personal asks can supply part of the giving decisions, reducing dependence on page traffic.

M+R reports a 0.05% response rate for fundraising email. That is about five gift responses per 10,000 messages sent, across gift types—not five monthly signups. Email and broad social cannot be assumed to supply the targets without credible reach.

Conservative planning assumptions

  • Monthly recruitment is a small pilot, led at $25; large monthly gifts contribute zero until committed.
  • The $5,500 public one-time model averages $55 per gift and still requires 100 completed gifts. It remains an unvalidated goal until a credible outreach route is established.
  • For future recurring receipts, apply a 20% collection haircut rather than assume every payment. This is an allowance, not an estimated churn rate. M+R reports early monthly-donor losses and 81% still active after seven months; active-donor retention is not the same metric as the share of projected dollars collected.
  • Use actual campaign response after launch to revise goals upward or downward. Don’t interpret a few early gifts as proof that a much larger campaign will convert at the same rate.
CheckpointEvidence requiredPlan response
Before launchNamed larger-gift prospects; realistic personal outreach assignments; verified giving routeThe $80,000 remains a fundraising target. Do not describe the gift chart as forecast revenue.
First week after Nov 10 launchSuccessful monthly starts, one-time receipts, qualified page visits and actual repliesPrioritize bridge commitments and completed gifts. Review the optional recurring pilot without allowing it to displace larger donor conversations.
Giving TuesdayReceived gifts and successful subscriptions, with genuine campaign responseLead with the year-end bridge invitation. Welcome monthly support as an additional path; keep received funds and future payments separate.
Dec 15 board checkpointCurrent cash, confirmed payments due by Dec 31 and remaining obligationsAddress the remaining gap through specific personal asks and the approved board process. Do not fill the gap with annualized subscriptions.

Under the starting scenario, one successful subscription payment adds $300 by year-end. If every donor starts early enough for two successful payments, it adds $600; count actual payments rather than assume the second. The $1,440 discounted January–June projection is valuable ongoing support, reported separately. The existing December 31 decision rule is not changed here.

Past major donors · the bridge case

ACA has helped developers build real skills, software and startups. Poloko and Kananelo’s work on SaMMy—now used by Lesotho PostBank, with continuing launch support from Africa Code Foundry—shows what this pathway can produce.

But ACA’s current funding model is not yet dependable enough to sustain the academy for the long term. We are making an exceptional year-end appeal for $80,000 to provide operating runway from January through June 2027.

That support will keep the people and work in place while we develop and test a more sustainable model. It funds the program and the capacity to build its financial future.

Would you consider an additional gift of [amount] toward this six-month bridge?

The personal conversation includes the current budget, available funds, what is changing, proposed milestones and the actual board decision rule. Any promise about reporting or outcomes requires confirmation.

Your gift supports the people, program and everyday work that make this pathway possible—and the work of making it last.

Help fund ACA’s next six months

The giving page offers a one-time contribution and monthly support, including $25/month. The campaign invitation remains the six-month bridge.

Consistent facts across audiences

Public copy and private conversations describe the same purpose and use of funds. Established donors receive more detail about the reset, risks and decisions because their support is being sought for that transition. A short public caption can link to the fuller explanation; the giving page should explain why the six-month period matters.

“Reset” and “runway” are useful in personal conversations. Public language can say “sustain the work and build a stronger financial foundation.” The explanation stays honest without making an unapproved closure claim or putting the financial risk onto current students.

FUND A DAY · AFRICA CODE ACADEMY

Fund a DayGiving-page link

Keep the language conversational. “Questions, complaints and praise” reads naturally. “Help fund a day at Africa Code Academy in 2027” is the campaign invitation. The giving page provides the choice of a one-time or monthly gift, including $25/month. Keep “ship it forward” out of broad public copy. Don’t promise a next class before it is funded.

Record a 20-minute interview with each developer, proposed by November 8. Start with: “Show me something you built that you’re proud of. What made it difficult?” Ask what each contributed, how they worked through it, what the academy helped them learn or practise, and how the Foundry’s ongoing support has helped bring SaMMy to market. Use their actual words. Familiar experiences such as feedback, teamwork and solving a difficult problem can make the story relatable when they describe them.

Lesotho PostBank is a contracted customer and has used SaMMy for eight months as of November 2026. This is the campaign’s established customer outcome. Specific claims about revenue, profitability or jobs require their own evidence. SaMMy is separate from the three 2026 Demo Day projects.

Production fallback: if the interviews are late, use the documented achievement and an approved photo, then publish their words when ready. A no-match campaign and approved still-photo version must work without a finished film. All external versions require Joon’s exact-message approval.

Campaign progress

Show the runway secured and the work it supports.

Public progress

Lead with a developer story and actual received progress toward the six-month bridge. Monthly-supporter growth is reported separately as early sustainability work. Future payments do not fill the runway grid or become cash raised.

Count a new monthly supporter after a successful first payment. Keep signups awaiting payment separate. Don’t turn a donor’s change of tier into a second new supporter.

Operating progress

The 181-day grid can remain a secondary view of received funds for January–June. About $442 is one calendar day’s share of the $80,000 budget, subject to reconciliation. It is an average budget equivalent, not a teaching day or hour.

Day dedications are optional recognition. They do not restrict the gift to a literal date. Remove quarter-day and half-day price ladders, the February target and “fund an hour” language from the public invitation.

Illustration only · no live campaign data
$0 received of $80,0000 whole-day budget equivalents of 181 · receipt illustration only

One receipt fills the grid once. Future monthly payments and unpaid pledges do not fill received-funding squares. The supporter-count view and receipt view measure different things; they cannot be added together.

Production dependencies: CC04 lists Zo as owner; a launch on Joon’s personal LinkedIn profile requires confirmed account ownership and posting arrangements. Scheduled progress, event moments, founder posts and film releases have separate production slots. CC15a features the selected SaMMy proof story. Email deliverables are tracked through their linked tasks. A match is optional; subscription eligibility must say whether the first payment or later payments qualify, with cap and exact dates. The November 27 film close and all changed final copy still require approval.

Fundraising routes

Personal asks lead. Public stories support the case.

Past major donors

Joon · personal conversations

The primary route to the bridge. Discuss the financial crossroads, the six-month budget, what will change and an appropriate exceptional gift. Agree payment timing and follow-up; distinguish a fixed pledge in installments from an ongoing subscription.

Introductions and partners

Committee · trusted supporters

Warm introductions extend the donor route. The SaMMy story and Demo Day provide evidence, while the full bridge case explains the need. No assumption that broad social will replace an unavailable lead gift.

Email and social

Zo · KullKatt · Joon

Lead with real people and outcomes, explain the six-month purpose and invite support for the year-end appeal. Fund a Day makes contributions tangible. The giving page offers both gift frequencies.

Alumni and local networks

Liteboho · staff · alumni

Share pride in the work, approved stories and relevant introductions using locally suitable channels and giving options. Current students are not an audience for a financial-crisis appeal.

Recurring support

Giving page now · broader H1 outreach

$25/month remains an approachable option. Early subscriptions are welcome, with a wider acquisition and retention effort developed during H1. Their future value is not booked against the December received-funds target.

Stewardship

Joon · donor follow-up

Bridge donors receive the agreed account of the work, milestones and actual funding progress. An H1 recurring appeal respects prior commitments and donor preferences, rather than treating recent bridge donors as a fresh acquisition list.

Giving page

One-time and monthly support, clearly presented.

Before the November 10 launch, verify the existing giving route with the new wording. The fuller page remains due November 18. The page presents monthly and one-time options within the same campaign.

Reconcile the older $700-per-developer framing and “every dollar” claims with the actual operating appeal. The campaign funds the academy’s people and everyday work, including leadership costs; it does not guarantee new places or fund SaMMy.

  • Lead with the approved SaMMy story, the $80,000 bridge purpose and a clear one-time giving option. Present $25/month alongside it as ongoing support.
  • Offer $10, $25, $50, $100 and custom monthly amounts. Larger recurring gifts remain possible through a custom amount or personal conversation. Keep the full strategic ladder out of the main public graphic.
  • Keep Give once easy to find, with $25, $50, $100, $250 and a custom amount.
  • Label monthly currency, amount, first charge and repeat frequency clearly. The donor must knowingly authorize the recurring gift; don’t switch a one-time choice to monthly.
  • Explain how to change or cancel ongoing support using the actual available method. Don’t promise account controls that haven’t been verified.
  • Keep dedications and public recognition optional. Treat giving and optional marketing updates separately.
  • Check the subscription confirmation, receipt, supporter record, change/cancellation process and failed-payment handling. Validate the donation flow before promoting it.

Giving page · monthly support

A little each month.
Support that keeps going.

$25/month

Help sustain Africa Code Academy’s work in Lesotho and Botswana. Choose another monthly amount or give once if that works better for you.

Monthly support · clearly labelledGiving-page link

Monthly giving on the campaign page

The Fund a Day card introduces the campaign and its progress. The giving page carries the monthly invitation alongside a clear one-time option.

Alongside the one-time bridge contribution, a $25/month choice provides an approachable route into ongoing support. Other monthly amounts and custom gifts remain available, with the recurring amount and frequency clearly displayed before confirmation.

Illustrative giving-page card. The final donation form includes payment details, recurring authorization and the available subscription-management method.

Campaign measurement

Track the bridge, available runway and sustainability work.

SupportersExisting baseline, new monthly supporters after first payment, tier changes and cancellations.
Monthly incomeActive scheduled monthly amount and actual successful recurring collections, reported separately.
Available cashFunds for January–June after earlier obligations, restrictions and fees; gap to the current board rule.
ProspectsPrimary one-time ask, optional monthly alternative, owner, next contact, payment date and confirmed terms. Keep instalments and ongoing subscriptions distinct.
RetentionRenewing payments, failures, recoveries and cancellations. Update the six-month projection with actual results.
AcquisitionCompleted monthly signups by appeal, with distinct one-time gifts and recent-donor suppression.

Report gross receipts and processing costs so the cash plan reconciles. Show pledges outside cash. Don’t annualize subscriptions into campaign receipts. For 2027 stewardship, invite supporters to see what the academy is working on through updates they have opted into; thank donors without an immediate repeat ask.

Launch readiness

Funding, story and production milestones.

  1. Campaign proposition: $80,000 by December 31 for January–June runway to develop and test a sustainable model; SaMMy, Poloko and Kananelo provide the proof story, with Fund a Day as the public participation device. The giving page offers one-time and monthly support, with a prominent $25/month option. Joon + committee
  2. Recurring pilot: keep monthly giving available now; develop the broader H1 recruitment effort during the funded reset. The working model includes one $50 supporter; $100/month and above count only after commitment. These are management targets, not benchmark-derived conversion predictions. Joon + committee
  3. One-time funding: validate the original $66,000 larger-gift chart and identify the additional $8,200 needed beyond the working mix. Until identified, the gap stays visible. Joon + committee
  4. Operating decision: reconcile the January–June budget, prior bills, fees and payment dates. Keep the $80,000 goal and December 31 deadline; future subscriptions do not become received money. Board + Joon + Liteboho
  5. Story material: names, training histories, contributions, consent and portraits; interviews proposed by November 8. Liteboho + Joon
  6. Giving page · November 9: clear six-month bridge purpose, one-time gifts and a monthly option. Confirm receipts and subscription management before promotion. Giving-page owner + Zo
  7. Publishing calendar: final messages, production dates and responsibilities require sign-off before scheduling. Zo + Joon
The current cohort completes regardless of the result. Future cohorts begin only when funded. No invented statistics, personal stories or customer outcomes. Each exact final external message requires Joon’s approval. Campaign communications and operating decisions follow their established approval processes.

Sources and assumptions

Research and planning basis.

  • M+R Benchmarks 2026 — Fundraising: annual online recurring share by nonprofit size and monthly-donor retention. These are not ACA conversion probabilities.
  • M+R Benchmarks 2026 — Website Performance and Email Messaging: channel conversion context. The lower traffic assumptions in this plan are judgement calls.
  • Neon One’s 2026 recurring-donor findings: median recurring gift and distribution by annual donor value. These do not establish a monthly acceptance rate within each amount tier.
  • Strategy guidance: Bridgespan on managing through tough times supports close, candid engagement with key funders. Nonprofit Finance Fund’s full-cost guidance supports explaining the complete operating need. The audience-specific messaging and proposed H1 checkpoints are recommendations for this campaign.
  • Management assumptions: the 11-supporter starter mix, one-time gift counts, one subscription payment by year-end, 20% future-collection allowance and 1–2% traffic scenarios. These allowances are planning judgements rather than published conversion estimates.
  • Startup pathway: SaMMy is a startup being launched with continuing support from Africa Code Foundry. Poloko and Kananelo’s work sits within that academy-and-Foundry pathway, rather than an independent alumni venture.
  • Customer outcome: Lesotho PostBank has a signed SaMMy contract and had been using the product for eight months as of November 2026; confirmed by Joon on November 4.
  • Campaign basis: the campaign brief and November 3 working plan. The $80,000 target, existing gift chart, purposes and approval boundaries are retained as planning context.
  • Calendar source: Content Calendar, rows 3–29; snapshot November 4, 2026. The calendar includes existing messages, proposed copy and current production status.
  • Planning status: commitments, audience reach, available funds and payment readiness require confirmation. The $80,000 remains the campaign target; the funding model shows a conditional case and its remaining gap.
